I hope you’re all having a wonderful day! As you may have guessed, today’s post is about happiness, I hope that it will make some sense to you and even be a little helpful! I literally just sat here and wrote things as they were coming to mind. So here it goes!
Happiness – what is it? How can I achieve ultimate happiness? Is it even possible to always be happy? Is happiness a real thing or is it an illusion that we so strongly want to believe in? Honestly, I haven’t figured out the answer to most of these questions but this is my attempt at making sense out of it all.
Happiness can mean different things to different people. What makes me happy may not necessarily make my neighbor happy and so forth. Sort of like “One mans junk is another mans treasure!”. According to dictionary.com “Happiness is the state of being happy”. This is a very broad definition because, as I mentioned, happiness is not the same for everyone. For example, bubble baths make me incredibly happy, yet some people are terrified of water and baths would make them anxious and uncomfortable.
Alright, let’s try to answer the questions I asked earlier. How can I achieve ultimate happiness? That, my friend, is 110% up to you. No one can make you happy or give you happiness. Just like no one can make you unhappy, it’s you’re choice. Having said this, it is possible for things, objects, memories, people, etc. to aid in your happiness but you should never put 100% of your happiness in something or someone else’s hands. There are a few reasons for this. One, the person can just up and leave whenever they please and what then? You’re left broken and shattered and unhappy. What if this person that you’ve put all your happiness into does something that you are 100% against or you feel like they’ve done something to betray you. So, in short, you need to figure out what makes you happy. A few things that make me happy are: sunny days, freshly brewed cup of coffee, working out, doing groceries, freshly cleaned bed sheets, and when my cat cuddles with me.
Is it possible to always be happy? I’m going to go on a whim here and say no. No, because you will be faced with situations sometimes that are not ideal. For example: a car accident. If you are involved in a car accident you will undoubtedly be upset and unhappy. This is normal and you should give yourself the chance to be upset. What’s important is that you grieve, pick up the pieces and move on. Remember that there is a silver lining in most situations!
Is happiness a real thing or is it an illusion that we so strongly want to believe in? I believe that happiness is a real thing that can so easily be taken away from us, if we let it. I also think that the more you want to be happy, the happier you’ll be. For instance, you are invited to a wedding and you are dreading it because you don’t know what you’re going to wear and you won’t know many people who will be attending. You can keep going with this mindset and you will surely be unhappy until the day comes. Alternatively, you can look at the brighter side of things and you can be happy for your friend who’s about to get married. You can easily go shopping for a new outfit and once you get to the wedding there will probably be someone there who you will know and can talk to during the evening. Our minds are very complicated and can often make things seem worse than they are. Sometimes all we need to be happy is to simply take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Ask yourself will this make a difference in my life in a week, a month or even a year from now? If the answer is no, then you shouldn’t spend too much time being unhappy about the situation and just move on.
In short, I one hundred percent believe that happiness stems from within and it all starts with you. You can only be as happy as you allow yourself to be and your happiness depends on you and you only!
