I’m going to sit here and write this blog post as it comes to mind. Hopefully it makes sense and forgive me if it doesn’t! Also I need to apologize for my overuse of the word “carb”!
All of my life or at least since I can remember I have been a lover of all things pasta, bread and chips, basically I loved carbs! When I started my weight loss journey it was a huge struggle for me, I had no idea what to eat that would/could replace my love of carbs. For many years I fought with myself and my cravings for carbs. I thought “carbs are BAD and I can’t eat them anymore”. Boy, was I ever wrong! Carbs ARE NOT the enemy, in fact carbs are energy and you need carbs in order to function in your daily life, they are needed for brain function, they help you perform in the gym, basically you NEED them. The trick is to eat the right kind of carbs. Most of the food you eat contains carbs, fruits included. Are you going to stop eating fruit cause they contain carbs? No. Because fruit is one of the healthiest things you can eat. Have you ever seen anyone gain 50 lbs from eating fruit? I didn’t think so.
If like me you like pasta, bread and chips I have amazing news for you! You can still eat all these things!! You simply need to substitute the white flour carbs for whole grains and whole wheat. So instead of eating regular spaghetti substitute it for whole wheat spaghetti and same for the bread! As for chips there are alternatives, try kale chips, apple chips, pretzels etc. If you don’t like whole wheat bread, I’d suggest trying rye or pumpernickel bread (it’s my fav). I’ve always been a type of person who eats her meal and gets bloated within minutes. Ever since I swapped the white flour foods for whole wheat and rye I have little to no bloating. It’s a miracle!
I decided to write this blog post because last night my boyfriend and I went to the grocery store to get a few things and something to eat when we got home. We went around the store a few times and picked out Kraft Dinner. I know, I’m such a bad person for this, right? Wrong, health and fitness is about finding balance in your life. So anyways, I made the kraft dinner, 2 boxes to be exact, to share of course. I started eating it and while I was eating, I wasn’t feeling guilty about it, the feeling was more like “I don’t even like this and I’m not enjoying this like I thought I would”. I think there are several reasons why I felt this way and the main reason is, wait for it… EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE!
I used to not know WHAT I was eating. I mean, I knew I was eating Kraft Dinner and it probably wasn’t that healthy for me but frankly, it tasted delicious and I didn’t care. What changed is that I now know and am very aware of what I put into my body. I don’t restrict myself and when I feel like eating something, I do. But for the most part I eat foods that will fuel my workouts and foods that will help me look and feel better! Education and knowledge will get you further along this journey than anything else! Once you understand your body and how it works, you will gain your health back!
I watched a documentary called “Hungry for Change” about a year ago and I really believe that it has helped change my life, if not my life, it’s definitely changed the way I view food and how I use it. I use it to build me up instead of tearing me down. Watch Hungry for Change Now!
