Firstly, I’d like to mention that my family is supportive of my healthy lifestyle, although they don’t always eat the healthiest themselves, they know that this means a lot to me so they support and respect my choices. Also I am 24 years old so it’s my choice, really. Having said this, I’m aware that this isn’t the case for everyone and some of you are also much younger than me. Since I haven’t had to deal with this issue personally, I’m going to tell you what I would have done if my parents were giving me a hard time and/or not supportive of my lifestyle change.
I think I should first mention what my eating and exercising habits are like. My diet consists of 90% clean eating and 10% indulgences. I don’t count calories, macros or anything else, I eat intuitively. Meaning that I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I feel full. In short I just listen to my body and give it what it needs! I will be posting another blog post of Sunday with everything that I’ve eaten from May 12th to May 18th, for your reference. As for my exercise habits, I workout 45 minutes to 60 minutes, 3 to 5 times a week. I lift weights and run, and most of the time it’s all done at home!
Alright, let’s get started shall we? So you’ve been thinking long and hard about this new lifestyle thing, you really want to give it a go. You’ve approached your parents about it and they are opposed to the idea for whatever reason. Sound like what’s happening to you? So, the first thing I would do is try to stay calm. Getting upset will not help you convince them that this is a good choice for you. Then, ask them why they don’t support my decision. Once, they’ve explained the reasoning behind their decision, I would explain my reasons for wanting this lifestyle. If you’ve chosen to change your lifestyle you must have done some research right? Show them! If they see that you’ve put some time, thought and research into this they might be more apt to listening to you and offering their help, guidance and support.
Here are a few points I would write down before I talk to my parents:
1. Why do I want to change my lifestyle? I.e. Health, confidence, self-esteem, lose some weight, ethical/moral reasons etc.
2. How will this benefit me?
3. Is this lifestyle going to negatively affect them?
4. How are you going to ensure that you get the right amount of nutrients needed to be healthy?
5. Explain why you would like their support?
Depending on your age and your situation, your parents may have the last word in the matter. I think that in the end your parents are concerned about you and just want to make sure that you are healthy and happy. And if you show them that this is what makes you happy and healthy, I think in the long run, they’ll realize that and come around.
If after all of this your parents still aren’t on the same page about this whole thing, don’t get discouraged and definitely don’t give up on your goals! Try to eat the healthy foods that they buy, also maybe ask them if they can buy you some fruits and veggies for snacks instead of processed foods, for example. Or if you have a job, you can buy your own. There are always healthier alternatives when choosing what to eat! As for workouts, I would start by doing at home workouts, you can find lots of these on YouTube, and I also have all kinds of different workouts posted under the “Health & Fitness” tab of this website.
I think that the longer you stick with your healthy lifestyle and show them that you are dedicated, committed, healthy and happy, they will show their support, after all they love you and want whats best for you!
